(Lincoln, IL) — A study done for the Illinois Department of Corrections is detailing unnecessarily harsh treatment of women inmates at the Logan Correctional Center in central Illinois. The federally-funded study found that women inmates get harsher discipline than men for similar offenses, are subject to excessive use of segregation as punishment and lack training to prepare them for life after prison. The study also found that 98-percent of women inmates in Illinois have been physically abused, 75-percent have been sexually abused and 42-percent suffer serious mental illness.
