No. 5 Clemson stopped No. 3 Louisville on fourth down at the 3-yard
line with 33 seconds remaining and held on for a wild 42-36 ACC
victory. Deshaun Watson was intercepted three times but threw five
touchdown passes, the last to Jordan Leggett with 3:14 left to put
the Tigers ahead for good after they blew an 18-point halftime
lead. Clemson won its school-record 19th consecutive home game
while the Cardinals remained winless in three meetings since
joining the ACC three years ago. Louisville’s Lamar Jackson passed
for 295 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 162 with two scores.
Wilton Speight hit Amara Darboh for a go-ahead touchdown pass with
7:56 remaining to help No. 4 Michigan beat eighth-ranked Wisconsin
14-7. In a matchup of two stout defenses, the Wolverines held the
Badgers to eight first downs, 71 yards rushing and 159 yards of
total offense. They also picked off Wisconsin freshman Alex
Hornibrook three times.
Nick Weiler booted a career-long 54-yard field goal as time expired
to lift North Carolina to a stunning 37-35 victory over 12th-ranked
Florida State. The Seminoles, who had their 22-game home winning
streak end, rallied from down 21 points and took a 35-34 lead with
23 seconds to play on a 2-yard touchdown scramble from quarterback
Deondre Francois. Tar Heels quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw for
405 yards and had four total touchdowns.
Joshua Dobbs connected with Jauan Jennings on a 43-yard, Hail Mary
touchdown as time expired to rally 17th-ranked Tennessee to an
improbable 34-31 win over No. 25 Georgia. Moments earlier, Jacob
Eason appeared to have brought the Bulldogs back from the brink,
throwing a 47-yard TD strike to Riley Ridley with 10 seconds left.
Elsewhere in the Top 25, 13th-ranked Baylor was down 14 in the
fourth quarter at Iowa State, but tied it with a pair of touchdowns
before winning 45-42 on Chris Callahan’s 19-yard field goal as time
expired. Second-ranked Ohio State whipped Rutgers 58-0 as J.T.
Barrett broke the school record for touchdown passes.
MLB=
The White Sox are expected to replace manager Robin Ventura with
bench coach and former Cubs skipper Rick Renteria. Ventura, 375-434
in five seasons with the White Sox, is in the final year of his
contract. The club has called a press conference for Monday to
reportedly name Renteria manager. He went 73-89 for the rebuilding
Cubs in 2014, and was replaced prior to last season by Joe Maddon.
The White Sox are a disappointing 78-83 this year.
The surprising Mets are headed to the playoffs and will host the NL
wild-card game Wednesday night. New York clinched the top wild-card
spot with a 5-3 win over the Phillies, while one of its potential
opponents rallied for a big victory. The Giants kept hold of the
second wild-card spot after rookie Ty Blach outpitched Clayton
Kershaw in a 3-0 victory over the Dodgers. San Francisco is one
game ahead of the Cardinals, who gave up three runs in the first
inning but pulled out a 4-3 win over the Pirates.
In the AL, the Orioles failed to clinch a postseason berth as the
Yankees scored four times in the eighth to rally for a 7-3 victory.
The Orioles now find themselves in a tie for the top wild-card spot
with the Blue Jays, who beat the Red Sox 4-3. Baltimore and Toronto
are 1 1/2 games ahead of the Tigers, whose postseason chances took
a hit with a 5-3 loss to the Braves. The Mariners were eliminated
from contention with a 9-8 loss to the Athletics in 10 innings.
GOLF=
The United States regained some momentum and stretched its lead to
9 1/2 to 6 1/2 over Europe heading into Sunday’s final 12 singles
matches at the 41st Ryder Cup at Hazeltine. The Europeans knotted
the event at 6 1/2 all by posting the first victory in the
afternoon four-ball matches. However, the U.S. won the next three.
The Americans are trying to regain the Cup after losing to the
Euros the last three times and eight of 10.
NFL=
Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to return from a shoulder injury Sunday
and start for the Patriots against the Bills. Garoppolo missed Week
3 because of a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder suffered
during the Patriots’ 31-24 win over the Dolphins in Week 2.
Garoppolo was limited in practice all week and officially listed as
questionable. Last week, he was listed as doubtful, leading to
Jacoby Brissett starting. Brissett ultimately hurt his throwing
thumb and has been limited in practice as well.
NBA=
76ers rookie Ben Simmons is scheduled to undergo surgery next week
on the broken bone in his right foot, and is expected to miss
approximately three months, a source told ESPN. Simmons,
Philadelphia’s first top overall pick since Allen Iverson in 1996,
landed on the foot of teammate Shawn Long during Friday’s scrimmage
and sustained an acute fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone.
