As Daylight Saving Time comes to an end this weekend, Illinois residents are being reminded to check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Clocks will fall back one hour early Sunday morning, November first. The Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal says the time change is a good opportunity to test alarms, check expiration dates and replace any devices that are no longer working.
Smoke alarms should be tested once a month and replaced every 10 years. Residents with alarms that use replaceable batteries should check those batteries and replace them as needed. Alarms with sealed, 10-year batteries should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
The State Fire Marshal also recommends having furnaces inspected annually by a qualified technician as colder weather leads to increased use of home heating systems.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly. Residents should make sure carbon monoxide alarms are working and never use outdoor grills or generators inside a home or garage.
Families are also encouraged to review their home fire escape plans. Make sure everyone knows at least two ways out of each room and has a designated meeting place outside.
