Decatur Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Nicole Nash Moody is marking her first 100 days on the job, with a focus on collaboration, communication and strengthening relationships across the district.
Moody outlined her top accomplishments, including advancing the district’s Roadmap 2030 plan, increasing engagement in schools, strengthening partnerships with employees and community organizations, and improving communication with families. She also highlighted efforts to strengthen the relationship between the superintendent and the Board of Education and improve the district’s financial and operational readiness.
The board also welcomed four students serving as junior board members for the 2026-27 school year. MacArthur High School students Remah Qattom, a senior, and Laiell Robinson, a junior, were recently sworn in. Eisenhower High School students Ezrah Vogel and Ke’Airra Cotton were sworn in earlier this month.
The students were selected by their schools’ administrative teams and will attend board meetings to provide student perspectives and serve as ambassadors for their schools.
During the meeting, Chief Operating Officer Tom Osbourne also discussed the potential financial impact of two proposed Tax Increment Financing, or TIF, districts on the school district.
TIF districts are designed to encourage redevelopment by setting a baseline for the taxable value of properties within a designated area. As property values increase, the additional tax revenue is directed toward the TIF district rather than being distributed to taxing bodies, including the school district.
Decatur officials are studying whether to renew the existing Near North TIF district and establish another district near East Garfield Avenue and East Olive Street.
The district also reminded families that November 11 will be a district-wide half day. There will be no school November 23 through November 27 for Thanksgiving break.
The Board of Education’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10, at 6:30 p.m.
