As food prices keep stretching household budgets across Illinois, a Decatur meat company is stepping in with a major donation. Heinkel’s Meat Packing Company is giving away 500 cases of smoked turkey legs to help families in need. Each case weighs 30 pounds, bringing the total donation to roughly $40,000 worth of food.
The company is partnering with United Way Decatur and Mid Illinois to distribute the turkey legs to communities across the state. Organizers say the effort is aimed at making sure more people have access to protein and a hearty meal during a time of rising grocery costs.
