Decatur real estate professional Michael Sexton has announced his candidacy for the Decatur City Council.
Sexton has worked in real estate for 32 years, serving families, small business owners and property owners in the Decatur area. He said his experience has given him insight into local economic conditions, property values, crime, property taxes and efforts to attract new businesses and jobs.
Sexton previously served two terms as a Decatur Township trustee. His other board service includes the Children’s Museum of Illinois, Decatur Public Library, Decatur Area Arts Council and Holy Family. He currently serves on the James Millikin Homestead Board and the city’s Historical Area Sites Commission.
Sexton said his campaign will focus on city spending, local business development and public safety.
His platform includes reviewing city expenditures, reducing what he considers unnecessary spending, maintaining balanced budgets and streamlining regulations affecting businesses. He also supports prioritizing funding for police and fire services, along with infrastructure such as streets, water and sewer systems.
In announcing his candidacy, Sexton said he wants city government to use taxpayer money carefully while focusing on essential public services.
