Shelby Electric Cooperative and CoBank are donating a combined $30,000 to help establish a new early learning center in Shelbyville.
The donation will benefit the Shelby County Child Care Consortium, which is converting a former bank building at 200 North Morgan Street into the Shelby County Early Learning Center. The building was donated by First Federal Savings and Loan Association.
A check presentation is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, at 10:30 a.m. outside the future center.
The project aims to address a shortage of child care options in Shelby County. Supporters say limited access to dependable child care can make it harder for parents to remain in the workforce and for local businesses to attract and retain employees.
Several local businesses and organizations have contributed to the effort, including Software Solutions Integrated, HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital, Shelby County Community Services Enterprises and Shelby County State Bank. Other supporters include P&H Manufacturing, Rincker Law and VFW Post 4829.
Faith Wheeler, a member services specialist with Shelby Electric Cooperative, said reliable child care is important to both working families and the area’s economic future.
The $30,000 contribution includes funding from Shelby Electric Cooperative and a matching donation through CoBank’s Sharing Success program, which supports rural communities and cooperative organizations.
With the latest contribution, Shelby Electric Cooperative’s donations to fundraising efforts across its nine-county service area through the CoBank Sharing Success program have surpassed $230,000.
