Small business confidence slipped in September, according to the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index. The index fell eight-tenths of a point to 97-point-9, just below its 52-year average of 98. Meanwhile, uncertainty edged higher to 90, well above the historical average of 68. For the third straight month, business owners named labor quality or availability as their top concern. NFIB Illinois State Director Noah Finley says worker shortages and rising input costs continue to squeeze small businesses. The report suggests Main Street employers remain cautious as they navigate hiring challenges and persistent cost pressures.
