DECATUR, Ill. — The state’s top high school girls golfers have arrived in Decatur as the Illinois High School Association girls golf state finals opened Friday at Red Tail Run and Hickory Point golf courses.
Both Class 1A and Class 2A championships are being held in Decatur, bringing 224 golfers to the city for two days of competition Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9-10.
Monticello junior Cate Sanders is the lone state qualifier from the 28 schools in the Decatur-area coverage region, competing individually in the Class 1A tournament at Red Tail Run Golf Course.
Sanders advanced to state after shooting an 80 at the Rochester Sectional. She was scheduled to begin Friday’s opening round at 10:18 a.m. from the 10th tee.
The Class 1A field includes 112 golfers competing at Red Tail Run, while another 112 are participating in Class 2A at Hickory Point Golf Course.
Among the Class 2A competitors is Barrington senior Reese Wallace, who shot a 59 at her sectional tournament. Wallace is part of a Barrington team that qualified for state alongside programs including Normal University, New Trier and Lincolnshire Stevenson.
The championships feature both individual and team competition, with Friday’s opening rounds determining which golfers and teams advance to Saturday’s final round.
Individual and team state champions will be crowned Saturday in both classifications.
