The Macon County Health Department is reminding residents that carrying naloxone can help prevent deaths from opioid overdoses.
The FDA recommends that people who have been prescribed opioid pain medications, people taking prescription medications to treat opioid use disorder and those at increased risk of an opioid overdose carry naloxone.
That includes people who use opioids along with alcohol or other drugs such as benzodiazepines.
The FDA also recommends that caregivers of people at risk of an opioid overdose have naloxone available.
Family members and friends of people taking opioids are also encouraged to keep naloxone on hand in case of an emergency.
Naloxone is available at the Macon County Health Department and at multiple locations throughout Macon County.
Residents can use the health department’s online locator to find a naloxone box near them.
