Illinois, Chicago Challenging Trump Administration’s New Public Charge Rule

Illinois and Chicago are taking legal action against the Trump administration’s new public charge rule. Both are involved in separate lawsuits seeking to block the Department of Homeland Security policy, which they say could penalize immigrants for legally using public benefits. The rule would allow immigration officials to consider benefits such as food, housing, or health assistance when reviewing immigration applications. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul calls it another attempt to target immigrants and their families. The plaintiffs are asking a federal judge in New York to declare the rule unlawful and stop it from taking effect.
