Karlie Bless recorded 10 kills and seven assists as Clinton opened its volleyball season Tuesday with a 25-19, 25-19 road sweep of Riverton.
The Maroons created separation during the opening set and held off several Riverton pushes before closing out the 25-19 win. The second set followed a similar script, with Clinton maintaining its advantage down the stretch to finish the two-set victory.
Bless led a Clinton attack that finished with 22 kills and 21 assists. The Maroons also produced 10 service aces and 41 digs in the victory.
Kate Parish also provided several key points for Clinton, including a kill and an ace highlighted in postgame coverage, while Bless contributed from both the front row and setter position.
The victory gives Clinton a 1-0 start after the Maroons finished 14-20 overall last season. Riverton, which went 23-14 a year ago, opens the season 0-1. Tuesday’s matchup was a nonconference contest, leaving Clinton’s Central Illinois Conference record and Riverton’s Sangamo Conference record untouched.
Clinton returns home Thursday to face Mt. Pulaski. Riverton has a quicker turnaround, hosting Mt. Pulaski Wednesday night before continuing a stretch of four straight home matches to open the season.
