Warrensburg-Latham bounced back from an opening-night loss Tuesday, rallying past Cerro Gordo/Bement 24-26, 25-15, 25-19 for its first victory of the season.
The Cardinals dropped a tight opening set before taking control of the match. Warrensburg-Latham responded with a 10-point victory in the second set and finished the comeback with a six-point win in the deciding third.
Junior Allison Cushing led the Cardinals with 12 kills and seven assists. Anna Kierbs added nine kills while hitting .727, and senior Brettlyn Hickey finished with three kills and two blocks.
Warrensburg-Latham finished the match with 38 kills, 51 digs and 32 assists while adding three service aces.
The performance continued a strong start individually for Cushing, who has 17 kills through the Cardinals’ first two matches. Kierbs has 11 kills through five sets and is hitting .643 for the season.
Tuesday’s victory moved Warrensburg-Latham to 1-1 after the Cardinals opened the season Monday with a 25-7, 25-20 loss at Unity Christian. Cushing had five kills in the opener before more than doubling that total against Cerro Gordo/Bement.
Cerro Gordo/Bement also moved to 1-1. The Broncos had opened their season Monday with a three-set victory over Tuscola. Tuesday’s match was a nonconference contest, leaving both teams at 0-0 in league play.
Warrensburg-Latham is coming off a 25-11 season in 2025 and finished 4-1 in conference play. Head coach Gillian Welker said before this season that winning the conference and making a postseason run are among the Cardinals’ goals with a roster that includes five seniors alongside several younger players moving into varsity roles.
The Cardinals return home Thursday at 6 p.m. against Argenta-Oreana before hosting Olympia Saturday morning. Cerro Gordo/Bement hosts Urbana University Thursday night.
