The Mt. Zion Police Department is reminding residents about the rules and safety concerns surrounding e-bikes, e-scooters, electric skateboards and other micromobility devices.
Police say they’ve received questions and complaints about the growing use of these devices, and officers have experienced several close calls involving riders and vehicles.
The department is reminding parents to talk with children about following the rules of the road when operating e-bikes, e-scooters and similar devices on public streets.
Police say the devices can be difficult for motorists to see, and riders should remain alert, obey traffic laws and use appropriate safety equipment. Helmets, protective pads and other safety gear are strongly encouraged.
The department also points out that some of these devices are capable of reaching speeds of 30 miles per hour or more.
Mt. Zion Police are also reminding current and prospective owners that Illinois has implemented new statewide regulations involving electric bicycles, e-scooters and other micromobility devices.
Additional regulations and operating requirements are scheduled to take effect January 1st, 2027. Depending on the type and speed of a device, those requirements may include minimum age restrictions and, in some cases, a valid driver’s license.
Police are encouraging anyone who owns or is considering purchasing an e-bike, e-scooter, electric skateboard or similar device to familiarize themselves with the applicable Illinois laws and regulations.
The department’s message is simple: ride responsibly, follow the rules of the road and help keep local streets safe for everyone.
