Illinois is moving to expand protections for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed three new bills into law. One closes a legal loophole between emergency and final orders of protection, strengthening safeguards for survivors of domestic violence and harassment. That measure takes effect in 2028. A second law creates added protections for people considered at the highest risk of serious injury or death from an intimate partner. A third expands access to sexual assault nurse examiners through telehealth options. Those two measures are set to take effect next year.
