Elections Board Tells DOJ It’s Following Law

Illinois election officials are pushing back against federal claims of potential voter fraud. In a letter sent Monday to the U.S. Department of Justice, the Illinois State Board of Elections said it is complying with all federal election laws. The response follows a DOJ warning that threatened legal action over allegations the state may be knowingly keeping ineligible names, including noncitizens, on voter rolls. The Justice Department has also sued the board, seeking access to Illinois’ full voter registration records as part of an audit into voter eligibility. State officials say they are following the law while defending their election procedures.
