The National Weather Service has continued an Extreme Heat Warning for much of central Illinois through 9 p.m. Monday, including Macon, Christian, Shelby, Moultrie, Piatt, DeWitt, Logan, Sangamon, Effingham, Menard, Cass, and several surrounding counties.
Heat index values are expected to reach as high as 115 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.
Forecasters say the combination of extreme heat and high humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for people working outside, participating in outdoor activities, or those without access to air conditioning.
While thunderstorms may develop late this afternoon or evening and bring some relief, dangerously hot conditions are expected to continue until then.
Health officials urge residents to:
- Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
- Check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and anyone without air conditioning.
- Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle, even for a short time.
According to the National Weather Service, pregnant women, newborns, young children, older adults, and people with chronic medical conditions are among those most vulnerable to extreme heat. Young children cannot regulate body temperature as efficiently as adults, while many seniors and those with chronic illnesses or limited mobility face an increased risk of heat-related illness.
Officials also remind anyone working outdoors to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. If someone shows signs of heat stroke—including confusion, loss of consciousness, or a body temperature above 103 degrees—call 911 immediately, as heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency.
