(Denver, CO) — The new NFL season begins the same way the last one ended. The Broncos edged the Panthers, 21-20, in the regular-season opener in Denver. The Broncos escaped the Super Bowl rematch victorious after Graham Gano missed a 50-yard field goal with four seconds left.

(Denver, CO) — Another NFL player is taking a knee during the national anthem. Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall knelt down during the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” prior to last night’s game. Marshall is following in the footsteps of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who refuses to stand for the anthem in an effort to protest police brutality. Marshall and Kaepernick were teammates in college at Nevada.

(Flushing, NY) — The New York Mets are taking a flyer on former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow. The Mets have signed the 29-year-old to a minor league contract. Tebow will report to the club’s Instructional League in Port St. Lucie, Florida on September 18th.

(St. Louis, MO) — Danny Santana and Orlando Arcia hit back-to-back solo homers in the second inning and the Brewers went on to crush the Cardinals 12-5 at Busch Stadium. Kolten Wong hit a two-run homer for the Cards, who fell a half-game behind the Mets for the second NL Wild Card. Jamie Garcia was tagged for five runs in less than four frames as he slipped to 10-and-12.

(Houston, TX) — After a travel day, the Cubs are in Houston tonight to take on the Astros. They begin a three-game series at Minute Maid Park, with Jon Lester seeking his 16th win for Chicago. Houston sends 9-and-10 Collin McHugh to the hill. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. The Cubs have lost their last two.

(Richmond, VA) — The Sprint Cup Series heads to Richmond International Speedway for the Federated Auto Parts 400. It’s the final race before the Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs get underway. Qualifying takes place at 5:45 tonight, with the race to follow at 7:30 tomorrow night.
