Pritzker Signs Legislation to Increase the Number of Law Enforcement Candidates and Strengthen Scott’s Law

Two new Illinois laws are now on the books, aimed at strengthening support for law enforcement and emergency responders. Governor JB Pritzker signed the measures into law this week. One updates recruitment standards for deputy sheriff candidates, while keeping existing training and probation requirements in place. Supporters say the change could help departments fill vacancies without lowering professional standards. The second law focuses on Scott’s Law, which requires drivers to slow down and move over for stopped emergency vehicles. That measure is designed to bring more consistency to traffic enforcement for violations. The recruitment law takes effect next year, while the Scott’s Law change is effective immediately.
