The Illinois Stewardship Alliance is criticizing a U.S. Supreme Court decision that limits state-level liability claims against pesticide manufacturers. The ruling reverses a Missouri Court of Appeals decision that had allowed claims against Monsanto over the lack of a cancer warning on Roundup herbicide labels. The case involved Missouri farmer John Durnell, who alleged his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was linked to Roundup exposure. ISA had joined an amicus brief supporting Durnell. The group says the ruling is a setback for transparency and accountability, especially for farmers seeking legal options when they believe pesticide exposure has harmed their health.
