Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is joining nine other governors in calling on Congress to reject two federal bills they say would weaken state and local climate protections. In a letter to U.S. House and Senate leaders, the governors argue that Senate Bill 4340 and House Resolution 8330 would override local authority to pass laws aimed at protecting residents from climate change. They also warn the measures could block governments from taking legal action against corporations accused of harming communities through pollution. The governors say states must retain the power to respond directly to environmental threats affecting their residents.
