The National Weather Service in Lincoln has issued a Tornado Warning for northern Macon County, southern Logan County and southwestern De Witt County until 5:15 PM Wednesday.
At 4:23 PM, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Elkhart, approximately nine miles south of Lincoln, moving east at 50 mph.
The storm is capable of producing a tornado and quarter-size hail. Forecasters warn that flying debris may be dangerous to those caught outdoors, while damage to homes, vehicles and trees is possible.
Communities in the warning area include Mount Pulaski, Latham, Chestnut, Maroa, Argenta and Oreana.
Residents in northern Macon County should closely monitor the storm’s progress as it moves east through the area during the late afternoon hours.
Those within the warning area should take shelter immediately in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.
A Tornado Watch remains in effect for the entire listening area until 10 PM CDT. Additional severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings may be issued through the evening.
