Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs has launched a new grant program aimed at helping small, volunteer-run hunger relief groups across the state. The Charitable Trust Hunger Relief Grants will provide up to five-thousand dollars to food pantries, soup kitchens, and similar nonprofits that operate without full-time employees. Frerichs’ office says the program was created in response to federal cuts under the Trump administration to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, as well as a program that helped Illinois farmers sell food to Meals on Wheels and local food pantries. The grants are intended to help community organizations keep shelves stocked and meals moving.
