ISP ANNOUNCES CARJACKING AND THEFT PREVENTION RESULTS

State police in Illinois report significant progress in combating vehicle theft, thanks to targeted grant funding from the Illinois Secretary of State’s Vehicle Hijacking and Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention and Insurance Verification Council. The first quarter of 2026 saw 316 stolen vehicles recovered and 34 arrests made statewide. These efforts follow an initial $10 million grant, boosted by $677,000 awarded in June 2024 and an additional $637,500 in July 2025. Officials say these resources have allowed for enhanced enforcement strategies and technology upgrades, contributing to the recent surge in vehicle recoveries and suspect apprehensions across Illinois.
