Illinois drivers are being urged to put away their phones as law enforcement intensifies efforts to stop distracted driving throughout April. The Illinois Department of Transportation reports that, between 2020 and 2024, distracted driving contributed to 253 deaths and more than 28,000 injuries in the state. Police will be actively watching for anyone caught texting, checking social media, or watching videos while behind the wheel. Officials remind drivers that even brief moments of inattention can have deadly consequences. The increased enforcement is part of a statewide campaign aimed at saving lives and reducing preventable crashes on Illinois roadways.
