Illinois State Police recently conducted Nighttime Enforcement patrols in Champaign County throughout March, focusing on combating impaired driving and seatbelt violations between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Troop 7 Captain Heather Apperson shared the results, highlighting the ongoing battle against alcohol and drug impairment, which contribute to nearly half of all fatal crashes statewide. Nighttime is a particular concern, with over half of fatal collisions occurring after dark. The patrols are part of an effort funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, aiming to keep dangerous drivers off the roads and ensure compliance with safety restraints.
