Former Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson has received the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey in her Springfield home last July. The sentencing comes after Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder by a jury on October 29. Judge Ryan Cadigan delivered the sentence, citing the severity of the crime. Sontae Massey, cousin of the victim, said Sonya’s death serves as a lasting reminder of the consequences when authority is exercised without compassion. The case has drawn attention to the use of force by law enforcement in the community.
