Illinois’ population is on the rise for the third year in a row. The latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau estimate the state had 12,719,141 residents as of July 1, 2025. That’s an increase of more than 16,000 people compared to the previous year. Despite this growth streak, Illinois still has about 76,000 fewer residents than it did in 2020. Population experts cite factors like changing migration patterns, job markets, and birth rates as contributors.
