The Illinois State Fire Marshal is warning residents about the dangers associated with home heating during the winter months. As temperatures drop, improper use of heating systems and alternatives can cause house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Officials recommend keeping heat sources at least three feet away from flammable items and urge against using ovens, stoves, grills, or fuel-burning devices to warm homes. Space heaters should be turned off when unattended, and carbon monoxide alarms should be installed on every level and near sleeping areas. Generators and propane heaters should only be used outdoors, far from windows and doors, to ensure safety.
