President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice is arguing against Illinois’ assault weapons ban. While appearing before the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday, Harmeet Dhillon said the AR-15 and similar guns are “clearly” protected by the Second Amendment. The appeals court previously upheld the ban, which Governor Pritzker signed into law in response to the deadly Fourth of July shooting in Highland Park in 2022. It isn’t clear when the panel will rule on the constitutionality of the law.
