Illinois Honoring Late WWII Veteran
(Springfield, IL) — Illinois is paying tribute to a late World War Two veteran. US and state flags will be flown at half-staff tomorrow to honor Illinois Army National Guard Private First Class Harry Jerele, who passed away as a prisoner of war at the Cabanatuan POW camp in December 1942. His remains went unidentified for over eight decades until the U.S. Department of Defense used DNA to positively identify them. He was returned home and his remains were laid to rest Tuesday with full military honors at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
