Duke held high-powered North Carolina to just 27 points in the second half en route to a 74-73 win in Chapel Hill. Brandon Ingram had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the 19th-ranked Blue Devils, who have beaten their bitter rival four straight times.
North Carolina wasn’t the only top-10 team to go down last night. Third-ranked Oklahoma was edged on the road by Texas Tech, 65-63. Number-six Iowa was stunned by Penn State, 79-75. Thirteenth-ranked Dayton was also dropped on the road by Saint Joseph’s, 79-70.
It’s trade deadline day in the NBA. Teams around the league have until 3:00 p.m. Eastern to complete deals.
Artemi Panarin scored the go-ahead goal with three minutes to go and the Blackhawks skated to a 5-3 win over the Rangers. Panarin secured his first career hat trick with an empty-netter. Corey Crawford made 31 saves for Chicago, which leads the Western Conference with 81 points. The ‘Hawks are off until Sunday.
The Blackhawks will visit the White House today. President Obama will welcome the team to Washington, DC at 10 a.m. in honor of winning the Stanley Cup last summer. The President will also recognize the team’s charitable efforts to give back to the community.
Cardinals pitchers and catchers are in Jupiter, Florida for the start of spring training. The team will hold its first official workout today, with about a dozen pitchers throwing side sessions. The full squad arrives on Monday and will work out the next day. Exhibition play starts March 2nd.
Texas A&M University and the Indianapolis Colts have reached a settlement on a lawsuit filed over the trademark of the “12th man” phrase. The school sued the football team in November for using the phrase long associated with Aggie Football. No details have been released surrounding the settlement, but the university announced it was done “amicably and with good will.”
Illinois is back in action Sunday night at Wisconsin. The Fighting Illini snapped a two-game skid with an 82-66 rout of Rutgers on Tuesday. Illinois is 12-and-14 overall and 4-and-9 in the Big Ten. The Badgers are 16-and-9. Wisconsin plays at ninth-ranked Michigan State tonight.
Boxer Manny Pacquiao’s [[ PACK-ee-ow’s ]] recent anti-gay comments are costing him money. Sporting apparel giant Nike is terminating its contract with Pacquiao and calls his comments “abhorrent.” Pacquiao said gay people are “worse than animals.”
