The graves of over 500 veterans were decorated with wreathes and swags for the holiday season Sunday afternoon at Graceland Cemetery. This was the first year for the “Decatur Veterans Christmas Remembrance Project” whose goal is to honor and remember Decatur Servicemen and Women during the holiday season who have served our country by decorating their gravesites.
The project was spearheaded by Pete Vercellino and was made possible with support from the Decatur Back and Neck Center, Jim’s Auto Service, Buds and Blooms, Cromwell Media Decatur and Graceland Cemetery. The project hopes to grow to an annual Community Holiday remembrance for those from Decatur who served in the armed services and have since passed away. The decorations can be viewed at multiple gravesites north and west of the Korean War Memorial at Graceland Cemetery.
