Third Illinois Prison Guard Sentenced In Beating Death Of Inmate
(Springfield, IL) — A third prison guard is going to federal prison for the 2018 beating death of an inmate at the Western Illinois Correctional Center in Mt. Sterling. Former sergeant Willie Hedden was sentenced to six years for civil rights deprivation resulting in bodily injury and death and obstruction of justice. A federal grand jury indicted him, Todd Sheffler, and Alex Banta in 2019 with assaulting Larry Earvin. Prosecutors say all three beat Earvin to death while he was restrained and handcuffed behind his back.
