Illinois health officials are anticipating the arrival of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant. The Department of Public Health is performing sequencing to identify the variant. As soon as the Omicron variant is identified in Illinois, the IDPH will let the public know. Officials are urging everyone five years and older to get vaccinated and all eligible adults to get a booster.
Meanwhile, Illinois ranks 17th in the nation for its percentage of residents who’ve received the COVID-19 booster shot. In all, about one-point-nine-million Illinois residents have been boosted. That is nearly 15-percent of the state’s total population. It remains unknown how effective the vaccines and boosters will be against the new Omicron variant.
