Illinois midwives are on the verge of having access to licensure. The practice of providing unlicensed care to pregnant women and their newborns has been illegal since 1992. The state Senate passed a House bill to provide licensure to certified professional midwives in Illinois. The bill would also create an Illinois Midwifery Board. The bill is now headed to Governor J.B. Pritzker’s desk for signature.
