On June 18, 2021 at approximately 10:45PM, a Decatur Police Officer was parked, stationary in a church parking lot, in the 300 block of East Leafland Avenue completing paperwork. While seated inside of their marked City of Decatur squad car, a subject drove their vehicle towards the police squad car. As the subject neared the driver’s side of the squad car, the subject extended their arm from the vehicle window and fired a handgun one time in the direction of the officer. The officer was not struck or injured by the gunfire.
Immediately after the suspect fired the shot at the officer, a vehicle pursuit ensued of the suspect vehicle. During the pursuit, the suspect pointed the handgun at the pursuing officers. At that time, a Decatur Police Officer fired their duty weapon at the suspect. The suspect was not struck or injured by the gunfire.
The pursuit lasted for several minutes and ended in the 1300 block of North Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. At the conclusion of the pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Neither the suspect nor any officer was injured during the incident. A handgun was recovered from the suspect.
The suspect was identified as Marcus Boykin, B/M, 39. Boykin will be arrested on charges including Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, Aggravated Assault of a Police Officer, Possession of a Weapon by a Felon and Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding Police and Aggravated DUI.
The officer that fired their weapon has been placed on Administrative Leave per standard department policy while this incident is investigated.
