The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that construction on U.S. 36 from I-72 to just west of Harristown Boulevard and on U.S. 51 from Interstate 72 to just south of Cantrell Road west of Decatur is under way.
The work will reduce each road to one lane in each direction at times, with traffic control utilizing dynamic message signs, spotters and barricades. The interchange ramp work will be completed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. with ramp closures in place. A marked state route detour will be in place during the ramp closures. Only one ramp will be allowed to be closed at a time.
This project includes resurfacing, guardrail upgrades and pavement markings. Motorists can expect a smoother driving surface with this work, which is expected to be complete this fall.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
