Public schools could lose some state funding if they impose student dress codes to include hairstyles under a proposed bill. Illinois State Senator Mike Simmons of Chicago says it’s time to do away with old policies that discriminate against minority students. Schools that don’t comply with the legislation if passed would have their state funding kept at the previous year’s level. While most legislators agreed the change was needed, some question the harsh penalty. Senator Simmons says talks are ongoing.
