The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says now is a good time for boaters to start thinking about safety measures they need to take. Boating has become even more popular during the pandemic as people look for outdoor activities. DNR officials say boats should be equipped with life jackets for everyone on board, a fire extinguisher, a working horn and whistle, navigation lights, a copy of your registration and flares. Boats 16 feet and longer must also have a throwable flotation device.
