Bill Would Provide More Oversight On Assigned Reading In Illinois Schools

Assigned books and reading lists are the subject of a new bill.  Introduced by Democratic State Representative LaShawn Ford, of Chicago, House Bill 3254 would require a more diverse selection of books for public and charter schools, such as those authored by women and people of color.  School boards would also have to approve or deny any books on any course’s reading list.  The idea behind the bill is to prevent biased or racist literature from being assigned to students.
