Illinois child welfare officials are reporting a decrease in the number of child death cases during the last fiscal year. The latest report from the Department of Children and Family Services’ inspector general shows a 17-percent decline in child death investigations during the fiscal year that ended June 30th. DCFS investigates the death of any child whose family had been in contact with the agency in the previous year. The Inspector General attributes the decline to the agency’s response to recommendations made for systemic changes.
