Scherer Won’t Vote for Madigan as Speaker, New Contender for the Seat Emerges

In a released statement, State Rep. Sue Scherer says she will not vote for Mike Madigan as House Speaker. Last night’s announcement comes as a new contender has entered the race for state House Speaker.  The Legislative Black Caucus endorsed Representative Emanuel “Chris” Welch yesterday for Speaker.  Current Speaker Michael Madigan suspended his re-election campaign over the weekend, facing dwindling support.  The Legislative Black Caucus had originally endorsed Madigan.  Representatives Ann Williams and Stephanie Kifowit are also running for Speaker.
