A Chicago native is officially the first African American cardinal in the United States. Wilton Gregory became a cardinal during a Vatican ceremony on Saturday. Gregory was born in Chicago and ordained a priest in the city in 1973. The Washington D.C. archbishop was installed as the bishop of Belleville, Illinois in 1994. He also served as the archbishop of Atlanta from 2005 until being named the archbishop of Washington last year. The 72-year-old was president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from 2001 to 2004.
