Champaign Group Calls For Removal Of Resource Officers From Schools

A Champaign group is calling for the removal of school resource officers from area schools.  A protest yesterday outside the Champaign City Building was organized by Champaign Urbana Showing Up for Racial Justice.  Two SROs are placed in Urbana, and Champaign has SROs in each of the middle and high schools. The group says SROs are not the most effective choice for dealing with issues at schools.  The Urbana and Champaign police departments both released statements supporting the vital role SRO’s play in making appropriate referrals and creating a positive influence on students, parents, faculty, and staff.
