Historical statues in Illinois politics are losing their positions at the Illinois Capitol. The statehouse’s Office of the Architect of the Capitol voted to remove Stephen Douglas’ statue on the Capitol’s lawn and his portrait inside the statehouse. They also voted to remove a statue of Pierre Menard. Views on both men have soured due to their being slave holders at the time. The Office also approved moving a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that is offsite, to a location on the Capitol grounds.
