A new effort to transform the state’s juvenile justice system is underway. The three phase plan aims to reduce the harm of being locked up says Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice Director Heidi Mueller.
The plan will transition youth offenders to smaller, regional centers with intervention support from community organizations. They will be more of a dorm setting instead of a prison. The goal is to make sure kids don’t end up behind bars again and have the treatment and skills they need to succeed on the outside. Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton says the three phase plan will also make it easier for kids to see their families and get more personalized attention.
