Macon County State’s Attorney Jay Scott is warning residents of a new scam that has surfaced in the area. In a release, Scott says they have received reports of people having an unemployment benefit card arrive in the mail when they haven’t applied for benefits.
The State’s Attorney says this is a way for scammers to steal the identities of others and open unemployment accounts in their names, and especially targets senior citizens. He says once the card is activated the scammers then change the address on the account to have future debit cards sent to another location.
Scott says instances of the scam have been reported in Macon County and in other areas of the state and adds that anyone who hasn’t applied for unemployment benefits and receives one of these cards in the mail they shouldn’t activate or it.
If you do receive one of these cards in the mail, you are encouraged to report the scam to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, either by calling 1-800-814-0513 or by visiting the IDES website.
