The State Department of Transportation is alerting motorists that mowing is underway on Illinois highways. In recent years, IDOT has developed a specific schedule for mowing to help create and maintain habitat for pollinators like the monarch butterfly, which is at risk of being declared an endangered species. Crews are also mowing culverts, ditches, and around traffic signals.
The most extensive mowing period for IDOT is between July 1st and August 15th. Drivers are being asked to slow down, and give crews out mowing plenty of room.
