A federal judge is backing Governor Pritzker in a challenge by two churches to his stay-at-home order. Judge Robert Gettleman ruled yesterday against a temporary restraining order on the policy requested by Elim Romanian Pentecostal Church in Chicago and Logos Baptist Ministries in Niles. The churches were seeking to hold in-person worship services while abiding by guidelines for social distancing and sanitation. Gettleman said the churches “provided no evidence” that Pritzker’s order targets religion.
Locally, Salem Baptist Church in Decatur has announced that it will reopen for worship this Sunday. Pastor Derek Bradshaw questioned Pritzker’s deeming of dispensaries and liquor stores as essential and not churches. City Manager Scot Wrighton asked people to be patient and said if the area sticks to protocol, they may be able to open by May 29.
